JUDO UNIFORM BASICS
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SINGLE & DOUBLE WEAVE

SINGLE WEAVE
This Term indicates the general construction of the uniform. Single Weave uniforms are typically lighter than a double weave and used primarily by beginners to intermediates or by those practicing in hot weather. All Single Weave uniforms are not created equal. Certain brands are constructed to the highest standards and will last longer and wear better than most.

DOUBLE WEAVE
This term does not always mean that the uniform is double thickness throughout but rather it is heavier thread interwoven into two layers of woven base cloth than the single weave and has heavier reinforcements in high wear areas. Used by competition level fighters. It is highly recommended for those who are serious about their sport.

SINGLE & DOUBLE WEAVE WEIGHTS

SINGLE WEAVE
Single Weaves are from 10 oz. to 15 oz. in weight. Certain brands will use weights in 17 oz. to 18 oz. for competition, commonly known as heavy weight singles.

DOUBLE WEAVE
Double Weaves are about 20 oz. to 30 oz. in weight. Build to last tough training regiments to competition.

    PRE SHRUNK VS. PRE WASHED

    PRE WASHED
Pre-Washed helps minimize shrinkage, however there may be a slight shrinkage with the first wash.

    PRE SHRUNK
Pre-Shrunk is generally is used incorrectly to describe that it will not shrink further when laundered, however all cottons (all uniforms) will continue to shrink depending on water temperature and washes. Shrinkage will vary with all uniforms.

    SHRINKAGE
Most uniforms will shrink, some more than others. For the uniforms that shrink, use of a dryer will affect the overall shrinkage. Depending on the uniform and washing procedures, the uniform could shrink anywhere from 2-5 inches on the sleeve. The cotton used in production of a uniform will determine shrinkage, fit and softness.

HOW SHOULD I WASH MY UNIFORM

Wash Jacket and pants in cold water only! Cold water will remove blood stains and hot water will set them. DO NOT USE BLEACH   , as bleach will eat into the fabric and weaken it. Drip dry. Hot tumble drying is not recommended because the tumbling in the dryer will fray the fabric over time. 100% cotton will shrink in Hot Water or use of a Dryer.

    REVERSIBLE AND BLUE UNIFORMS
    1:
Turn the gi inside out, then soak overnight in a bath of vinegar and cold water. About half a cup of vinegar to every gallon of water is sufficient; the acidity of the resulting solution will set the dye, and help reduce fading. After soaking, rinse out the gi a couple of times in your washing machine or by hand - add some washing powder (and fabric conditioner if desired) for a pleasant, vinegar-free smell. Sebsequent washings may include additional vinegar or salt to further slow fading.

2: Wash pants separately, blue with blue and white with white.

3: Ensure all soap is rinsed out thoroughly, residue will cause blue to bleed.

Can I set the dye in my Blue judogi?

    Vinegar is not the answer!

Many people who know nothing about this subject recommend 'setting' dye in cotton clothing with vinegar. In fact, vinegar can do nothing useful for cotton dyes. Vinegar will help set some acid dyes, but only if applied while it is gradually heated to a simmer (generally in the presence of salt), solely in cases in which this necessary part of acid dyeing was omitted; acid dyes are used on silk, wool, or nylon, but never cotton.

    True Dye Fixatives
A product called "Retayne", sold by local quilter's supply shops as well as by most dye supply houses, such as Dharma Trading Company and PRO Chemical & Dye, is recommended by both Dharma and ProChemical for fixing dyes in commercially purchased cotton fabrics or clothing to prevent color bleeding during washing. This product is an ionic bulking agent, which acts to seal in the dye by purely physical means, rather than the chemical means which are so dependant on the type of dye. It seems that the particles of Retayne adhere to the dye molecules, effectively making them larger, so they do not come out of the fabric as easily. Note that Retayne is washed in as a laundry additive, and thus can be used only on things that can be immersed at least once without the dye immediately floating off and ruining other parts of the same item. Retayne may be removed by washing with overly hot water, and thus treated items must be washed in cool water (which is always a the best for your judogi).

Dharma Trading Company also sells a product called "Dharma Dye Fixative", which they claim increases the washfastness, wetfastness, resistance to persperation staining, and resistance to seawater fading of several different kinds of dye. It may be a generic version of Retayne,  or a related product, instead. Aljo Dyes strongly suggests the use of their equivalent product, Aljo Pro-fix PCD after-treatment, after using direct dyes, which would otherwise run too much to be at all desirable.

We would be very pleased to hear from any of you who try these.

Perhaps we could give more detailed recommendations with some
    actual user feedback.
